No project too big or too small

Paragon Protective Coatings Ltd. is a leading industrial painting and coating contractor in Western Canada, with field and shop operations and well-established relationships with some of the largest midstream companies, meeting the toughest coating specifications in the energy industry.

Paragon’s owner and founder started installing thermal spray (metallized) coatings for sour-service corrosion protection in 1997, mostly heavy industrial, in-situ, confined-space work on process vessel internals. That environment built a safety-first culture from the start, and it carries on today.

        Everyone home safe. Every shift.

Paragon was built inside process vessels: confined, hot, loud, and sour. Since 1997 that work has demanded a written procedure for every hazard and a crew that follows it. That is still how we work in the shop, in the field and inside your unit.

        Hazards & controls

The work is hazardous. Here is how we control it.

Abrasive blasting, thermal spray, high-pressure plural-component spray and confined-space entry are among the most hazardous trades on an industrial site. Each one has its own written procedures in our Safety Management System. Pick a hazard to see the controls and the procedure numbers behind them.

Trained before they start, tracked until they retire the ticket

Every new hire completes Paragon’s safety orientation before going on the floor. Field crews carry CSTS-09 and H₂S Alive, and supervisors take internal and ACSA-recognized supervisor safety training.

Tickets, certifications and their expiry dates are tracked for every worker, so nobody goes to site with a lapsed ticket. Ten AMPP-certified coating inspectors on staff mean the person checking the work also knows the hazards of doing it.

        Safety, digitized

Paper doesn’t protect anyone. Data does.

Paragon runs its own operations platform, PPC Cortex. Safety lives in it alongside the schedule and the QC records, so nothing depends on a form in a truck.

        Forms on the phone

Hazard assessments, toolbox talks and pre-use inspections are filled in and signed on phones and tablets, and filed by job automatically.

        Ticket expiry alarms

Every worker’s tickets are on file with expiry dates. Supervisors are warned before one runs out.

        Equipment that can’t be missed

Breathing-air certificates, CO monitors, crane and lift inspections are tracked. A tagged-out unit sends an alert that cannot be switched off.

          Increase component life

PPC offers cost-effective solutions to increase protection against extreme corrosion or wear environments.

Thermal spray (metallized) coatings propel molten droplets of metal at the surface, building fine layers until the required thickness is reached. Compared with paints and epoxies, they offer higher temperature resistance, superior corrosion and wear resistance and a longer life.

Small components are coated in our shop, using manual or automated processes; larger components are coated in our shops, within your facility or at the end-user site.

            For demanding service environments

Internal surfaces face some of the harshest operating conditions in an industrial environment. Paragon provides lining systems that protect critical equipment from corrosion, chemicals, immersion and abrasion.

From high-build 100% solids plural-component systems to precision thin-film epoxy linings, our crews apply protective systems designed around the requirements of each project — in a controlled shop, or in-situ and in confined space when the equipment can’t travel.

During Suncor Base Plant’s spring 2026 turnaround, Paragon renewed the erosion-resistant coating on the first-pass inlet tubesheet of waste-heat boiler exchanger 53E-303.

No spec package, so we wrote one

Suncor gave the scope by email, without a formal drawing or specification. Paragon wrote its own application procedure and an Inspection Test Plan to close the gap, and qualified adhesion on a test plate on 1 May before production began.

Two days, blast to final coat

The old coating was media-blasted to bare steel to SSPC-SP 5 with 16-mesh aluminum oxide, for a 4.3–5.2 mil profile. A bond coat went on 4 May; the Stellite 6 flame-spray finish on 5 May, inside the exchanger under confined-space conditions.

The 138 released items run from NPS 2 risers up to 42-inch valve spools weighing 29.3 t each. Above-ground piping gets Enbridge System A2 (DS-FSP1): Intergard 251 epoxy, then Interthane 990, each at 2–4 mil, in Enbridge white with green valve bodies and red handwheels. Buried sections get System B5 (DS-FSC1): Denso Protal 7200 at 30–50 mil. Grade-transition spools carry both, with the cutbacks taken from each drawing, and paddle blinds marked “do not coat” go back bare.

A work instruction for every cycle

For each release Paragon writes a work instruction listing every control number with its system and area, plus a blast-time and consumable estimate, so the crew, the inspector and the client are working from the same sheet.

42-inch piping, two systems, one transition

2026 · Small Shop · TC Energy PS-O-3 and EPU

Strike Group won the TC Energy MLV 77-78 launcher and receiver package and awarded Paragon the coating: 42-inch launcher and receiver piping plus NPS 12 kicker lines, coated in the Small Shop over several cycles.

              Getting the grade transitions right

Above grade got TC system PS-O-3: Hempadur 17410 at 6–9 mil, then Hempathane 55610 at 2–3 mil, in white FS 27925. Below grade got EPU: Denso Protal 7200 at 20–35 mil in one heavy coat. On the transitions the buried system caps the elbow above grade and the topcoat runs 600 mm below grade. Cutbacks of 125–225 mm are held, field-trim allowances and buried flanges are left bare, and final-cut bevels are kept square.

              Reported on TC’s own forms

Every cycle was reported on TC Energy’s TEF inspection forms against signed CGOPII inspection test plans.

              2026 · Edmonton shop · raw-water service

AGS Mechanical needed the 10-inch and 16-inch spools for a raw-water pump station near Rycroft, Alberta coated inside and out in a single shop visit.

              Keeping the lining continuous

Each spool was blasted to SSPC-SP 10. Bores were lined with Devoe Bar-Rust 233H at 8–12 mil, as the client requested, and the exteriors got Denso Protal 7200 at 40 mil DFT. To keep the internal lining continuous, each spool was limited to one direction change so the bore could be sprayed, and the external system was masked while the ID was coated.

Tested and documented, load by load

Every load was holiday tested and documented on a Paragon coating record, and shipped with signed ITPs for both the internal and the external system.

Paragon’s field crew coated an Enbridge integrity-dig tie-in inside a hoarded excavation in northeast British Columbia.

              Checked before every coat

In August the crew blasted and coated about 42 ft of 26-inch spool and 10.6 ft of 10-inch riser for burial, plus two structural pipe clamps; the riser and valve were then primed and top-coated above grade. Blast cleanliness, profile, salt and dew point were checked before coating. Below-grade work followed Enbridge DS-FSC1 and Pipeline Coating Repair Procedure PI-02-405, with Denso Protal 7200 and the Stopaq Wrappingband system.

              Back in December

The crew returned in December and applied SPC SP-2831 and Stopaq under a revised ITP. Crews worked 12-hour days, and the daily reports record every day incident-free and injury-free.

              Every joint holiday tested

Feb 2026 · CNOOC Long Lake · 9 days on site

Newland Steel brought in Paragon as an independent coating inspector for line pipe going into CNOOC’s Long Lake project.

              Joint by joint

Over nine days in February, a Paragon inspector checked each 17.4–17.9 m joint in the stockpile. Both FBE-coated and abrasion-resistant-overlay pipe were holiday tested with a spring electrode, and every holiday was counted and logged against the pipe number, along with any repairs already on the joint.

A record the client could use every day

Defects were handed to the repair contractor, then re-tested, and the daily tracker went to the client every evening, giving them a record of each joint.
